Sichuan Opera

Sichuan opera joins five vocal systems, with the high-pitched gaoqiang, its offstage chorus and percussion, as its most distinctive voice.

Time and place

Sichuan opera took shape in the mid-Qing around Sichuan and Chongqing, joining five vocal systems: kunqiang, gaoqiang, huqin, tanxi and dengxi, known as the five voices together. Theatres, temple fairs and teahouses in Chengdu and Chongqing were its main stages.

Musical features

Gaoqiang is the signature: the vocal line moves freely, an offstage chorus answers phrase endings, and percussion forms independent sections without string accompaniment. Huqin opera is led by the huqin, tanxi marks time with a bangzi, and dengxi is light and comic. Role types are finely divided, speech uses the Sichuan dialect, and the chorus turns a solo into call and response.

Repertoire

The White Snake, The Willow Shade Record, The Incense Offering, Autumn River, Viewing the Cave and Thinking of the World are long-standing favourites, with representative scenes in civil, martial and comic styles.

What to listen for

Hear The Sun Comes Out Bright, Liang Shanbo Visits His Friend and Singing of Insects first, learning the Sichuan dialect tones and phrase endings. Then notice how the chorus catches the final syllable. Follow the unaccompanied gaoqiang passages, the independent speech of the percussion, and the distance between soloist and chorus.

Common misunderstandings

Sichuan opera is often reduced to face changing, or gaoqiang mistaken for simply singing high. Face changing is one stage trick; gaoqiang is a whole system of song and chorus. The chorus is not a mass choir but a positioned, functional reply.
