Chinese Rock in 1986
At a Beijing stadium concert in 1986 Cui Jian sang Nothing to My Name and Chinese rock began.
An old army jacket, a distorted guitar and a tune with a north-western accent carried a new way of speaking into a stadium.
Time and place
9 May 1986, the Workers' Stadium in Beijing. At a concert of a hundred singers called Let the World Be Filled with Love, Cui Jian took the stage with his band and sang Nothing to My Name.
What happened
The concert took place on 9 May 1986. Cui Jian appeared in an old army jacket and sang Nothing to My Name with a distorted guitar and a melody inflected toward the north-west. He had played trumpet in the Beijing Song and Dance Troupe and led an earlier band. The performance was later treated as the beginning of Chinese rock; he went on to work with the band ADO, Tang Dynasty formed in 1989, and Black Panther's album reached the market in 1991.
What changed
Popular music acquired a voice that spoke as an individual, no longer a televised chorus or a copy of Hong Kong and Taiwan ballads. The band, the live show and original songs became a new unit of production; the north-west wind of the late 1980s put folk inflections into electric arrangements, and the band wave of the early 1990s followed. More importantly, rock made what to sing about a question again, with lyrics about confusion, cities and youth without answers. Venues spread from stadiums to small live houses, and listeners began to follow bands rather than singers.
Listen for the turn
Begin with the 115 BPM rock pattern, where the backbeat and the kick drum pull apart and the body moves before the melody does. Then the 128 BPM pattern, close to the drive of those stadium shows. Finally the Yellow River boatmen's work song, with one voice leading and many answering, its high register the part of Nothing to My Name that sounds most like the loess plateau. None is a Cui Jian recording, but hearing the rhythmic frame and the vocal source separately explains why that 1986 performance was remembered.
