Charles H. Gabriel

The busiest gospel-song writer of the early twentieth century, who fused verse and refrain

Who he was

Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (1856–1932) was born in Wilton, Iowa, and was largely self-taught. As a young man he taught singing schools and played organ in churches, then settled in Chicago, where he edited hymnals for several publishers and wrote a great deal of music. His Eye Is on the Sparrow (1905), In Lovingkindness Jesus Came (1905), Brighten the Corner Where You Are (1913) and Since Jesus Came into My Heart (1914) made him one of the most sung gospel-song writers of his era.

His place

By the early twentieth century the American gospel song had moved from the revival meeting into choirs, Sunday schools and homes. It stressed the contrast of solo verse and refrain more than the older hymn did, and borrowed popular-song rhythm: dotted figures, syncopation, short repeated phrases. Gabriel stands exactly at that turn, writing tunes and editing books, knowing how a song survives printing, teaching and performance. His work is church music, not concert repertoire; function comes first, though the craft is not crude.

What to hear

Hear first the difference in character between verse and refrain. The verse of His Eye Is on the Sparrow is almost speech, low in the voice; the refrain turns light, and dotted rhythm makes "I sing" jump. That turn is the heart of the song. Then hear what one ascent does. In In Lovingkindness Jesus Came the first line of the refrain is the highest point of the piece, and each later phrase steps down, as if lifted and set back; listen for how the harmony holds the peak. Finally hear the design for unison singing. Brighten the Corner Where You Are behaves like a march: narrow range, short phrases, much repetition, so a congregation can join without rehearsal. All three tracks are organ arrangements; the originals are solo voice with piano or small band.

Key works

Influence

Gabriel's songs reached twentieth-century American ears through songbooks, choirs and later radio, and His Eye Is on the Sparrow became a favourite of jazz and popular singers, crossing from church to concert hall. He turned the gospel verse and refrain into a repeatable template, and country gospel, Southern gospel and contemporary worship have all worked on it since.
