Character Piece
A short piano piece that captures one mood, its title hinting at character rather than story.
Related
A character piece catches one mood in a short span; its title suggests a temperament, not a story.
Origins and era
The bagatelle and the dance piece prepared the way in the late eighteenth century. Schubert wrote Moments musicaux, and Mendelssohn began his Songs without Words after 1829, making the piano sing alone. Schumann's Scenes from Childhood and Carnaval linked titled pieces into suites, while Chopin's nocturnes, preludes and mazurkas refined a single mood. Grieg, Brahms and Debussy continued the tradition.
What you hear
Most last one to five minutes and use ternary form or free sections. The title is a mood label such as Dreaming or Almost Too Serious, not a plot. One motive, accompaniment figure or colour governs the whole piece, and sonata-style conflict is rare. The melody often sits in an inner voice, while the accompaniment carries the character.
Key figures
Schubert made the moment a piece, Mendelssohn proved the piano could sing without words, and Schumann organised character through titles and suites. Chopin made the nocturne and mazurka independent genres. Grieg used folk inflections in his Lyric Pieces, and Debussy turned titles into colour and light.
Lineage
Bagatelles, dances and preludes feed in; Impressionist miniatures, jazz ballads, film cues and contemporary piano EPs come out.
Common misunderstandings
A character piece is not necessarily simple, and short is not easy. A title is not programme music, as it only gives a mood. The genre is not only Romantic, as Baroque and modern composers wrote comparable pieces.
