Cécile Chaminade

The Paris salon composer whose piano miniatures became hugely popular

Who he was

Cécile Chaminade (1857–1944) was born in Paris and first taught by her mother, then privately by Le Couppey for piano and Savard for harmony, with encouragement from Bizet. She never entered the Conservatoire, yet wrote a large body of piano music and songs, as well as the ballet Callirhoë and a Concertino for flute. She toured England and the United States, received the Légion d'honneur in 1913, and died in Monte Carlo in 1944.

His place

Chaminade was a late representative of French salon piano music. Her pieces are nearly all short, with clear tunes and technique serving effect, made to be played three or four at a time in a drawing room. Beside Franck or Debussy her harmony is far more conservative, but her ear for piano colour is precise: plucked strings, bells and moving air can all be made at the keyboard. That manner made her extremely popular in her lifetime and led later generations to underestimate her.

What to hear

Listen first for the shift of character. La Lisonjera Op.50, her best-known piece, has a light theme that moves between mockery and tenderness as the accent changes place. Then hear figures as pictures: Les Sylvains Op.60 draws dancing with fast arpeggios and trills, the top kept transparent rather than shrill, while Guitare Op.32 imitates a plucked instrument, pizzicato bass and melody taking turns so that the division of hands is easy to follow. Finally take the large form. The Piano Sonata Op.21 shows she was not only a miniaturist: across four movements salon melody is fitted into sonata frame, and the development shows how short motives can carry length.

Influence

In her lifetime Chaminade was one of the best-selling piano composers in France; her music was published and arranged widely and became teaching material in many homes. She showed that a salon miniature could be both polished and popular, and she gave a woman composer a firm place in a market centred on the piano. Heard again today, these short pieces preserve a French taste that the modernist story of the twentieth century kept quiet.
