Dieterich Buxtehude

The Lübeck organist young Bach walked hundreds of miles to hear

Who he was

Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637–1707) was born in Helsingborg, then part of Denmark, and spent nearly forty years as organist of St. Mary's in Lübeck. He succeeded his predecessor in the post and married the previous organist's daughter, directing both church music and the famous evening concerts known as Abendmusiken. His works circulated in manuscript for centuries; only in the twentieth century did the BuxWV catalogue appear.

His place

He is the central figure of the North German organ school in the later Baroque. The Lübeck post was one of the most enviable church positions in Europe, and he turned it into a public spectacle: concerts open to townspeople, with organ, choir and instruments working together. In 1705 the young Bach obtained leave and walked hundreds of kilometres to Lübeck simply to hear him play — a detail that became emblematic of the North German tradition.

What to hear

Listen first for the ground bass: the passacaglia theme returns without end while the upper voices keep changing shape. Then for freedom and rigour in turn: a toccata opens like improvised speech, then suddenly tightens into fugue. Next, the chorale skeleton: a chorale prelude sets the congregation's tune in the top voice while the other parts comment on it. Finally, the weight of the pedals: the North German bass is not accompaniment but foundation.

Influence

His pupils and listeners carried the North German manner onward; Bach's chorale preludes and free fantasias can be traced back to those Lübeck evenings. Without Buxtehude, Bach's organ music would sound like something else.
