Bossa Nova

Soft voices, syncopated guitar and intimate samba, scaled down for the room.

Bossa nova scaled samba down in late-1950s Rio, replacing the drum battery with a soft voice, nylon-string guitar and intimate volume.

Origins and era

In 1958 João Gilberto recorded Chega de Saudade, and the 1959 album of that name fixed the style. Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes wrote it; Gilberto sang with a light voice and a guitar batida. Nara Leão, Carlos Lyra and Roberto Menescal promoted it in Rio, and in the 1960s Stan Getz's work with Gilberto and Jobim carried it to the United States.

What you hear

The guitar does not strum: thumb and fingers split the batida into bass, chord and syncopation. The voice stays close to speech, quiet and nearly vibrato-free. Harmony favours major sevenths, ninths and chromatic voices, and phrases often refuse to resolve. Brushes or light sticks, short steady bass and an intimate mix shrink the samba battery to a small room.

Key figures

Jobim wrote the core repertoire with impressionist harmony; João Gilberto defined the guitar batida and the soft delivery; Vinicius de Moraes supplied lyrics and theatrical flair. Stan Getz brought bossa nova to the US jazz charts, and Astrud Gilberto's The Girl from Ipanema made the quiet voice global.

Lineage

Samba, cool jazz and the Brazilian song tradition feed in; MPB, jazz bossa, lounge and Brazilian pop come out. It shares harmony with Latin jazz but centres on song and guitar.

Common misunderstandings

Bossa nova is not simply slow samba, since its batida and harmony form their own language. Nor is it elevator music: the originals are quiet, but their syncopation and voice-leading are intricate. Confusing it with Latin jazz misses its roots as song.
