Blues Rock

Rock drums and distorted guitar take over the twelve bars, solos grow longer and the volume goes up

Blues rock is the hybrid that formed in Britain and the United States in the mid-1960s. It plays blues forms with a rock drum kit and distorted guitar, stretches the solos and raises the volume, moving the blues from clubs into arenas.

Origins and era

In 1961 Alexis Korner formed Blues Incorporated in London, a school for the British blues revival. The Rolling Stones formed in 1962, the Yardbirds followed in 1963, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton pushed guitar solos forward in 1965 and 1966, Cream formed in 1966 and Fleetwood Mac in 1967. In the United States the Paul Butterfield Blues Band brought Chicago style to white middle-class listeners in 1965, and the Allman Brothers Band joined blues to Southern rock in 1969.

What you hear

Drums play rock straight four or a shuffle, snare heavy and kick locked to bass, louder than electric blues. Guitar uses distortion or overdrive, riffs come from the pentatonic scale, and solos can run for minutes. The form is still often twelve bars, but sections stretch and add instrumental passages and drum features. Vocals sit forward, sometimes near shouting, and recordings layer thick guitars.

Key figures

Eric Clapton's guitar on the Bluesbreakers sessions gave blues rock its template, Peter Green and Jeff Beck made the tone thinner and brighter, and Jimmy Page moved from the Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin. In America Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield brought Chicago vocabulary into rock, Johnny Winter and the Allman Brothers amplified Southern blues, and in the 1980s Stevie Ray Vaughan returned Texas electric blues to the mainstream.

Lineage

Electric blues and rock and roll meet here, with 1950s Chicago and Memphis behind it and hard rock, heavy metal, Southern rock and jam bands ahead. It also reopened the American market for the blues in the 1960s.

Common misunderstandings

Blues rock is not 1950s rock and roll; it arrives later, with longer structures and heavier tone. Nor is it only British, since American and later continental European bands had their own versions. Calling every pentatonic rock song blues rock ignores the weight of form and improvisation.
