Time and place
22 December 1808, Theater an der Wien. Beethoven rented the hall for a benefit concert, played the Fourth Piano Concerto himself and conducted the premieres of the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies and the Choral Fantasy. Rehearsal was thin and the hall cold.
What happened
The Fifth opens with a three-short, one-long motive and moves from C minor to C major. The Sixth follows with meadows, a stream and a storm. The same evening included the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Choral Fantasy. The audience was cool and the orchestra struggled.
What changed
The symphony was no longer instrumental music for court or salon. It became a composer's address to the public. A motive running through a work gave instrumental music narrative force, and the struggle from C minor to C major became a nineteenth-century posture. It also showed a composer could rent a hall and sell tickets.
Listen for the turn
Begin with the Fifth's opening and count the three shorts and the long note. Then try the other recording and compare where the conductor places the weight. Finally hear the Sixth's first movement, where the same orchestra turns relaxed and bright.
