The Ninth Premiere

Vienna, 1824: the human voice enters the symphony's final movement.

Time and place

Vienna, 7 May 1824, at the Kärntnertortheater. Beethoven, already deaf, stood with his back to the audience while Umlauf conducted; the contralto Unger turned him around to see the hall standing.

What happened

The benefit concert included the Consecration of the House overture, three movements of the Missa solemnis and the Ninth Symphony. The finale set Schiller's Ode to Joy for chorus and soloists, making voices the body of a symphony's last movement, without precedent. Orchestra, soloists and chorus crowded the stage; rehearsals were rushed and the premiere imperfect, but the audience knew something had opened.

What changed

The symphony was no longer purely instrumental: voices, words and public ideals could enter its form. Its length, forces and emotional scale pushed the symphony toward the monumental, and Berlioz, Mahler and Shostakovich continued adding voices. The finale's theme later became the anthem of the European Union, and the Ode to Joy moved into political ceremony.

Listen to the turn

Begin with the Choral Fantasy: in 1808 Beethoven already ended a work with piano, chorus and orchestra, and the Ninth's finale is its enlargement. Then hear the Ninth, following the last movement from instrumental argument to the entry of voices. Finally take the short excerpt and remember the theme before returning to the whole.

This turn belongs to Classical; see Symphony and Theme and Variations.
