The Barber of Seville Premieres
Rome, 1816: Rossini's Barber fails on its first night, then conquers on the second.
Related
In Rome in 1816 a comic opera opened to hisses and won the same public over the next night.
Time and place
20 February 1816, Teatro Argentina, Rome. Cesare Sterbini adapted the libretto from Beaumarchais's comedy. Rossini was already Italy's most celebrated opera composer, and the theatre placed the work in the carnival season.
What happened
On the first night supporters of Paisiello's older Barber hissed, and the stage offered a run of accidents. The music was not weak, but chaos drowned it. On the second night the house quieted; the ensembles, patter and crescendo began to work, and the opera spread.
What changed
Rossini turned opera buffa into a precise ensemble machine. Characters no longer sang their piece and left; inside a single ensemble they interrupt, accelerate and overlap, and the conflict advances through rhythm and the interlocking of voices. Rosina's aria makes coloratura part of her character, while Figaro's patter makes language itself musical. The path runs through nineteenth-century opera.
Listen for the turn
Begin with the overture and notice how its light theme keeps returning. Then hear Rosina's aria: the coloratura is her way of testing, coaxing and calculating. Finally hear an ensemble as the voices thicken.
