Art Rock
Classical borrowings, odd metres and theatrical framing entered rock in late-1960s Britain.
Related
Art rock brought classical borrowings in harmony and form, odd metres and theatrical presentation into rock, forming in Britain in the late 1960s.
Origins and era
1967 was the starting point, when Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale and the Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed brought organ, strings and suite structure into singles and albums. King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King in 1969 set a heavier version, and Yes, Genesis and Emerson, Lake and Palmer carried it into large halls in the early 1970s. Roxy Music's 1972 debut joined from another direction, replacing displays of technique with collage and image.
What you hear
Form comes before tone. Suites, concept albums and long multi-part structures replace verse and chorus, and metres shift inside one piece, with 5/4, 7/8 and irregular bars common. Keyboards lay sustained chords on Mellotron or organ, guitar carries themes and variations, and classical motifs are quoted or rewritten. Lyrics lean toward literature and allegory, album covers and stage sets are part of the work, and concerts often include slides and costumes. The studio became an instrument, with more overdubs and tape effects than rock records of the period usually carried. The singing moves between speech and song, sometimes rising suddenly.
Key figures
Robert Fripp of King Crimson made dissonance and odd metre into a language, while Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman of Yes pushed high registers and keyboard technique forward. Peter Gabriel turned Genesis shows into theatre through costume and story, and Bryan Ferry with Brian Eno brought art-school collage into pop song. Procol Harum proved that organ and classical harmony could work inside three minutes.
Lineage
1960s psychedelia, classical training and the British art-school tradition feed in; progressive rock, experimental strands of post-punk and 1990s post-rock come out. It fixed the idea of the album as a complete work and made stage presentation part of the music. Its audience later widened toward metal and art pop, while the art-school method moved into music video and stage design.
Common misunderstandings
The common claim is that art rock equals progressive rock. The two overlap heavily, but art rock is wider and includes short songs, collage and image work; Roxy Music and early Bowie rely on neither suites nor length. Another is that the style is only about technique, when concept and arrangement, not solo speed, drive many of its records. Treating it as purely British is also wrong, since American experimental rock developed in parallel.
