Anton Rubinstein

The Russian piano giant who founded a conservatory and composed in European forms

Who he was

Anton Rubinstein (1829–1894) was born in Vykhvatintsy in Podolia, moved to Moscow as a child, studied piano with Alexander Villoing, and toured Europe from the age of ten. In 1844 he went to Berlin to study with Siegfried Dehn, worked in Vienna and Berlin, and settled in Russia in 1858. In 1862 he founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and became its director; Tchaikovsky was his pupil. In 1885–86 he gave historical recitals covering the keyboard repertoire in seven evenings, and died at Peterhof in 1894.

His place

His life spanned Russian music's move from aristocratic salons into institutions. He believed in professional training and in European genre standards: symphonies, concertos, operas and chamber music written by the rules. That put him in permanent conflict with Balakirev's circle, who found him academic, while he found them amateur. Both were doing the same work by different routes. His fame as a pianist was enormous; as a composer he never settled, and only a handful of pieces survive.

What to hear

Listen first for how a melody is supported. The first of the Two Melodies is the F major tune: the right hand sings one long line while the left flows in arpeggios. Then for song inside studies. Each of the Six Etudes Op. 23 has a technical task, yet the phrases still rise and fall. Next, dances changing faces: the Seven National Dances set Russian, Polish and Italian steps side by side, and the same hands switch accent. Finally, large form. The Second Piano Sonata runs four movements and brings its themes back transformed.

Influence

What he left most solidly was not music but institutions. The conservatory turned Russian training from private lessons into a public system, and Tchaikovsky was his pupil while Josef Hofmann studied with him privately. His own works faded quickly after his death and are only occasionally revived. But his question remains live: should a composer from a late-developing country master the European grammar first, or speak at once in local material?
