Anton Eberl
A Viennese composer valued by Mozart, dead young in the same city as Beethoven

Who he was
Anton Eberl (1765–1807) was born and died in Vienna. He studied music in the city as a boy and made his name as a pianist. He was close to the Mozart family and may have studied with Mozart; after Mozart's death he toured with Constanze and Aloysia Lange, later married the soprano Maria Anna Scheffler, moved to Saint Petersburg in 1796, served the Russian court as Kapellmeister for nearly a decade, returned to Vienna in 1805, and died of scarlet fever in 1807 at forty-one.
His place
He belongs to the Viennese Classical generation and competed with Beethoven in the same city. Like Beethoven he wrote piano sonatas and started from Haydn's and Mozart's phrasing; Beethoven simply went further. Some of his works were published under Mozart's name, and he eventually printed a newspaper statement naming the pieces that were his own. The episode shows both how close his style came to Mozart's and how chaotic the publishing market was. He wrote symphonies, piano concertos, sonatas, chamber music and stage works in quantity, yet today they are rarely played and mostly survive on recordings.
What to hear
Listen first for Mozart's shadow: the phrasing, cadences and phrase lengths of Op. 43 recall Mozart, but the bass is heavier and the turns more abrupt. Then for the drama of C minor: Op. 1 pushes a short motive forward again and again, and the young composer's impulse strains against the classical frame. Next, the teaching sonatina: Op. 5 has a simple texture and clear paragraphs, useful for recognising exposition and recapitulation. Finally, orchestral thinking: set his symphonies and piano trios beside the sonatas, and hear how orchestral layers enter the keyboard writing. The three pieces also reward comparison as examples of the teaching style against the concert style.
Key works
- Piano sonatas Op. 1, Op. 43
- Sonatina Op. 5
- Symphonies Op. 33, Op. 34; piano trios Op. 36
Influence
Eberl's music circulated for a time under Mozart's name and was only sorted out and recorded in the twentieth century. His name now appears in studies of doubtful Mozart works. He reminds us that classical Vienna was not three masters but a whole street of competitors.
