Charles-Valentin Alkan

The Parisian recluse who wrote piano music denser than an orchestra

Who he was

Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813–1888) was born in Paris and entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of six. As a young man he moved among Chopin, Liszt and George Sand. His family name was Morhange, and he took his father's first name, Alkan, as his own. In the 1840s he withdrew from public performance, lived largely by teaching and writing, and composed almost exclusively for the piano. The outside world heard little of him for decades.

His place

Alkan belonged to the generation of Chopin and Liszt but took the opposite road. Instead of salon miniatures he treated the piano as a full orchestra. Inside the Twelve Studies in Minor Keys Op.39 he placed a "Symphony" and a "Concerto" for solo piano. After 1850 he stayed away from the platform, so his music circulated among students and a few colleagues, and his fame stayed inside Parisian drawing rooms.

What to hear

Listen first for the bass. Alkan's chords often press to the bottom of the keyboard, and in Op.39 the left hand carries the weight of double basses and bassoons while still shaping a line. Then hear the stacking of layers: his textures are not melody plus accompaniment but several strands moving at once, with a second theme hidden in the middle. Then follow long spans. The Grande Sonate Op.33 describes four ages of life in four movements, each slower and heavier than the last, its opening over in under a minute and its slow movement as long as a whole act. The Esquisses Op.63 show another side, forty-eight short pieces by turns playful and dark, and a good way in; the Toccatina Op.75 lasts under three minutes and never releases its grip.

Key works

Influence

Alkan's reputation was modest in his lifetime, and Busoni and later pianists brought him back in the twentieth century. He is now heard as a pioneer of the orchestral piano, a single instrument asked for orchestral weight, layering and stamina. His studies have entered conservatory syllabuses, where technique and musicianship are tested together, and complete recordings have finally let listeners see the scale of what he built.
