Aleksey Stanchinsky

Russian modernist who died at twenty-six, between Scriabin and Prokofiev

Who he was

Aleksey Stanchinsky (1888–1914) was born at Obolsunovo in central Russia, grew up on a country estate, and studied piano and composition at the Moscow Conservatory. He wrote almost nothing but piano music, in small quantities, and very little of it was published in his lifetime. He died in 1914 at the age of twenty-six, leaving manuscripts that friends preserved.

His place

He sits exactly between Scriabin and Prokofiev. In harmony he is close to late Scriabin, using dense chromaticism and unresolved seventh chords, but his texture is thinner and his counterpoint clearer, with the marks of strict imitation training. He was also drawn to modes, and the Lydian prelude is an experiment with church scales. Because he died young he never settled into periods, and today he reads as a side road of Russian modernism. His manuscripts contain many unfinished large works, which editors could publish only as fragments.

What to hear

Listen first for the modal mutation. The raised fourth of the Lydian mode makes a major scale sound familiar and wrong at once, and that "almost" quality is his speciality. Then the independence of lines: in the Canon-Preludes every voice imitates while the harmony drifts, so follow how two lines keep their own direction. Then fragmented form — the First Sonata has no long melody; motives are interrupted and resumed, closer to memory than to narrative. Finally restraint in lyricism, since his short pieces never plead and often end on a single note.

Influence

His influence worked through the fascination of a few colleagues and later researchers rather than through a wide repertoire. He proved that Russian modernism was not only Scriabin's mystic chords and Prokofiev's percussion but also a quieter, more contrapuntal road. Echoes of that road can be heard in Stravinsky's neoclassical years and in Shostakovich's fugues. Pianists occasionally slip one of his preludes into a recital, and the effect is usually unexpected. The surviving manuscripts are few, and they are the whole case for him.
