Adolf von Henselt

A Bavarian who taught a generation of pianists in St Petersburg

Who he was

Adolf von Henselt (1814–1889) was born in Schwabach, Bavaria, and studied in Vienna as a young man, attracting attention at court and from publishers. In 1838 he moved to St Petersburg, became court pianist and taught there for nearly forty years. He returned to Germany late in life and died at Bad Warmbrunn in Silesia in 1889.

His place

Henselt belongs to the mid-nineteenth-century generation of virtuoso pianists. He was a contemporary of Liszt and Thalberg, yet spent most of his working life in Russia. His output is small and almost entirely for the piano: studies, nocturnes, a ballade, waltzes. His teaching in St Petersburg reached a good many Russian players and helped make wide stretches, thick chords and long breaths part of local piano training. His own catalogue is small, but almost every piece asks the player to rethink the fingering.

What to hear

Listen first for the stretch of the hand. The Twelve Characteristic Studies Op.2 are full of chords of a tenth and more and of rapid shifts; hear how the pedal glues a wide interval into one harmony instead of leaving separate notes. Then hear technique softened: the Twelve Salon Studies Op.5 handle similar motions but in more songful sentences, the same action reined in for a lyrical passage. Then follow long melody. The two Nocturnes Op.6 spin a long line over spread arpeggios, and the sound keeps direction without obvious bar accents; the Ballade Op.31 puts that breath into a single narrative movement, its middle darkening harmonically and its climax built by register rather than speed.

Influence

Henselt is rarely played now, but his idea of technique survived through teaching. He treated the expansion of the hand as a musical means rather than an acrobatic trick, and the slow thick chords and wide arpeggios he wrote recur in the Russian school. Much of the stretched texture familiar to Rachmaninoff's generation can be traced to studies of this kind.
